Sandblasting- you wouldn’t believe how many times we have been asked what this is at Juno Mirrors and Glass. Luckily, it is one of those things that is what it sounds like. As the name suggests, it is simply the process of blasting sand particles at high speed to abrade a smooth surface. Told you it’s in the name.

Now, that’s what the definition is… so what is sandblasting actually used for? Well, it has many purposes and uses. For one, it can be used to etch patterns onto a surface. Another way it can be used is to clean certain metals. When it is used with glass, the clarity is removed out of the surface. This makes it become opaque with a clear design or vice versa clear with a sandblast design.

More likely than not, we have seen sandblasted glass windows in front doors and bathrooms. This is where the privacy of opaque (or ‘frosted’ as some may call it) glass is clearly practical. Throughout the years, we’ve taken sandblasted glass designs to new heights. We are confident we can do the same for you.

Now that you know what sandblasting means, let’s move onto the more exciting part- the process of sandblasting. In simple terms, it involves the sand particles being propelled along a tube on a high-speed current of air. Then, the sand shoots through a nozzle at the end of the tube, hitting the glass. This results in the corroding of the surface, which leaves a milky white and frosty look to it. Depending on the amount of sand being used or the speed of the jet, the etching results can vary and look completely different from each other.

In case you were wondering, there are alternative methods in which to etch glass. These can be done by using creams and acids. However, these techniques involve extremely dangerous materials and don’t offer the same range in technique or effect. Therefore, sandblasting is now the more common approach.

As aforementioned in the paragraphs above, sandblasted glass is ideal to have privacy in front doors and bathrooms but it has many other potential uses. For instance,  double glazed units can be sandblasted for privacy reasons or also for decoration. For businesses, there is the possibility of having your brand name or logo onto your office doors. It would be a lovely and practical addition to the office. We can not stress enough how useful and unique a sandblasted glass piece can be for your place. It is a great way to create a modern and voguish look to your place, as well as some much needed privacy.
