Never heard of UV bonding? Want an introduction to what it is and what is it all about? Well, you are in the right place. At Juno Mirrors & Glass Ltd, we pride ourselves in helping out all our clients and help them make the most informed decision. Let’s get started on UV bonding.

When a glass item requires holding together seamlessly, UV Bonded Glass is the right solution. UV is short for Ultraviolet.

UV bonding glass is the process of adhering glass together using UV curing adhesive. This means it is a way of putting two pieces of glass together. This results in a strong yet invisible joint to be used in a huge range of applications. It removes the needs for additional screws, bolts and fixings.

As it has a seamless joint, UV bonding is ideal for decorative structures and can also be used with sandblasted and laminated glass. It is a great option for furniture, display cases and shelving. It is also perfect for use in making modern, minimalist and stylish accessories. Some of these accessories range from umbrella stands, magazine racks and ornaments.

Now, you may be wondering how this all actually works. Don’t you worry, we have you covered.

UV light bonding glue is also known as liquid glue, because it remains liquid for extended periods of time. It remains stable at room temperature. Exposure to a UV bonding light is the only thing that can ‘trigger’ it and make it dryer, forming a bond.

This process is possible because of how intense the UV actually is. When a UV glass bonding light is shone on the adhesive, it sparks a chemical reaction within the glue. As a result, the adhesive begins to harden. This is what forms the bond. This process is referred to as ‘curing’.

Surprisingly , all this can be done rapidly. Applying the light for just a few seconds can create a strong bond that lasts. It can be made more firm by leaving it for longer. Another option could be to even apply a second layer to create an unbreakable bond. It should be noted that it may be needed to leave it on longer depending on the wattage of the UV glass, bonding lamp  you plan to use and the glass thickness.

The stability of the compound and the distinct conditions needed for the UV liquid glue to cure, makes this technique much more straightforward and more reliable in comparison to alternative methods like drying. In alternative bonding methods, the adhesive is cured by evaporation. Unfortunately, this process is massively unpredictable and unstable. It can be easily affected by multiple variables, such as temperature and humidity.
